Thoughts on Christmas Blessings

December 26, 2014  Yesterday, I spent my 65th Christmas here on planet earth, and it wasn’t half bad really.  Since our son, Bobby, was killed while fighting with the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan back on July 17th, 2006, it’s been a pretty rocky road for my husband and me.  But, I guess over time the grief, which I know will never completely go away, has lessened to the point at which I can now even attempt to think about getting myself, and my life, back on some kind of ‘normal’ track around here. So, since around last summer, I’ve begun picking up paint brush and paint, along with reorganizing the things in my life I’ve manage to collect, and putting them in better order, and even moving furniture, not just to clean behind it, but to finally place it where I’ve wanted it to be for so long now. It’s finally beginning to feel as though life for me just might be somewhat possible once again, and that’s something I really didn’t think would ever happen for me., that’s Unexpected Christmas Blessing #1! month [November, 2014], I was so excited about being able to shop for my son’s widow and our two granddaughters, along with my sister and her family, for Christmas, and since we are in a bit better place so far as ‘disposable income’ goes, I was looking forward to being able to wrap all the gifts myself, and send them off from here, rather than ordering things online, and having them sent directly to their recipients.  However, due to a bookkeeping snafu on the part of the online store from whom I’d ordered the gifts, the entire order ended up being cancelled!  Now, that doesn’t sound much like a Blessing–at least not on it’s surface–and, I have to admit I was, and still am, a bit more than a little upset at what occurred[!]  But, the saying goes that “Every cloud has a silver lining”, applies here.  And, I think the one inside that dark ‘cloud’ has more to do with causing me to remember how much better things are when I either pay cash for what I buy, or use a Debit card, and say “NO!” to using credit of ANY kind!  , I consider what happened with those cancelled gifts to have been unexpected Christmas Blessing #2! The next SNAFU is something that, on it’s surface, appeared to be a disaster-in-the-making, so far as two Christmas gifts went.  I spend quite awhile looking for just the right Christmas gifts for my son’s widow, and our 2 granddaughters.  I finally found them, then ordered them, and the store told us they would arrive by December 17th, in plenty of time to get them sent off so they would arrive before Christmas Day.  Well, one of the items managed to arrive earlier than expected, so I was very excited, especially when the store send us a message saying that the other two items would arrive the next day, so we could go and pick them up.  However, that was not to be the case!  Instead, the store told us they didn’t have them there for us to pick up.  Then, on top of that, the next day they informed us that the items must have gotten lost in transit–what?!  They told us we could go ahead and re-order the 2 items [2 silver lockets], but when I checked to make sure they were still in stock I saw that one of them had already sold out!  On the bright side was the fact that I was able to find 2 other jewelry gifts for the girls that I liked even better!
, I consider that to have been unexpected Christmas Blessing #3!

       Count Your Blessings

{Video and lyrics from movie, “White Christmas“}

When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep,
and I fall asleep counting my blessings!
When my bankroll is getting small, I think of when I had none at all,
and I fall asleep counting my blessings!.I think about a nursery,
and I picture curly heads,
and one by one I count them
as they slumber in their beds.

If you’re worried and you can’t sleep,
just count your blessings instead of sheep.
And, you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings!

If I’m worried an I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep.
And I fall asleep counting my blessings!

So, if your worried and you can’t sleep…

Bob & Betty[together]:
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
and you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings!

[Thanks to Matthew Traher for lyrics] Ciao Bella.
