Definition: 5th Column

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”

~Marcus Tullius Cicero 58 B.C.~    So, what is a “5th column”, and why is it a danger, both to individuals, as well as to countries? It is a clandestine group that secretly ensconces itself within a country’s infrastructure in order to undermine it, and ultimately destroy it.  Once safely ensconced within the infrastructure of a country, those who belong to the “5th Column” do what Vidal’s sympathizers did, and set about to undermine their target.  It’s as Cicero said in the quote above, concerning traitors.  They rot ‘the soul of a nation’, and they work in secret in order to accomplish that goal.  They worm their way into a country’s Body Politic, in order to gain entrance into the country’s government, pretending to be loyal when they only want to betray that country.  They also gain entrance into a country’s legal system, pretending to be loyal to upholding that country’s laws, when, instead, what their aim is means those laws will begin to fall by the wayside as quickly as they can manage to subvert them.  Only their compatriots will end up benefiting from their legal decisions, and the country’s citizens will have the laws fall on them in a crushing, unmerciful manner, thanks to those hidden within the 5th Column.  What are the signs a country is suffering from a deadly cancerous “5th Column”, rather than to be suffering from run-of-the-mill governmental corruption?  They are fairly easy to spot once you understand what to look for, because you’ll begin to notice that, somehow, things have changed in unexpected ways.  Criminals, that are secretly working with the hidden 5th Column, and who would normally find themselves literally thrown under the jail, so to speak, receive much lighter sentences than they ordinarily would, if they receive one at all.  And, as the traitorous ‘cancer’ spreads, they are often unbelievably pardoned, instead of serving out their just prison sentences.  Thus, justice is subverted successfully.   Politicians, who are secretly members of the traitorous 5th Column, and who normally wouldn’t stand a chance to even be elected dog catcher, are suddenly in positions of genuine power within the government.    Tax money within the government’s care, begins to disappear with no one held accountable. On top of that, new taxes are almost secretly placed on the heads of the citizenry, with no thought as to the welfare of those who will now need to pay it.   The country’s military, if once strong and able to be trusted, begins finding it’s budgets cut severely, maybe only slightly to begin with, until finally, their soldiers are having to scrounge around for parts for vehicles, and weapons.  They also are inexplicably sent off to fight in endless conflicts that are never formally declared to be wars.   Yet the politicians never seem to care about supporting their efforts, so never care about them at all when they begin to cut their efforts in the conflicts short prior to any decent, reasonable military conclusion to those conflicts.     Those same brave soldiers , once wounded while fighting in one of those undeclared wars [called conflicts], are ignored and/or mistreated by the same government who sent them to fight in their undeclared wars/conflicts….     Etc.  Etc. Etc.  The list goes on and on. I could most likely come up with quite a few, but so could you.  Just take a good hard look around and you’ll see them.     However, like the cancerous invader it really is, yet ‘wiser’ than it’s counterpart-in-destruction, the 5th Column begins slowly so as not to draw attention to itself.   Then steadily, increases it’s undermining influence, until, through the sheer mass of the damage it causes, is able to weaken the victim country to the point at which the outside force, for which the 5th Column works, can easily invade and topple the country’s government, and take it over if it still needs to do that.  Otherwise, the traitorous citizens, within the country itself, succeed in bringing down their own country down.   I think that can also be called a “Coup d’etat”, Benedict Arnold would be so proud.    And, the citizenry of that country finds that it’s unable to do anything to stop it, since it took them too long to finally realize what was going on.  The men and women with whom they worked side-by-side, and thought they could trust, they suddenly realize were working to overthrow their own country’s government.  By that time, though, the number of people within the 5th Column have more than likely swelled so large that it will seem as though they are everywhere.  As the saying goes, “no one can tell them apart”, from genuinely loyal citizens, “without a program”.  They, by necessity, have become skilled liars.

Is there any country today that is showing signs that it’s suffering from the presence of such a traitorous “5th Column”? At all?   If the answer to that question is “No”, then this particular set/group of “5th Columns” are doing a whale of a bang-up job.  Unfortunately.

“May the sun shine, all day long,
everything go right, and nothing wrong.
May those you love bring love back to you,
and may all the wishes you wish come true!”~Irish Quotation.
